Campaign Issues

Why are you running for this office?
I am a candidate for Macomb County Sheriff for a fourth time.  I am very concerned about the insidious nature of the “Good Old Boys Network” that exists in Macomb County government.  I am also concerned with the low morale that exists within the department and it is time to bring a fresh leadership to the Sheriff’s department.  Back in 2000, I was the first female ever to file for Sheriff in Macomb County and the reason was because the Dad Hackel let his department down. He now has to be registered as a sex offender. The privilege he had being the Sheriff did not give him the right to rape a female. Ultimately, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. After 35 plus years, this department really needs someone to step up and be a leader without being entitled or self-influenced.We need to work as a department not as a Sheriff who has personal agenda’s. Being your Sheriff is my utmost importance. I have won the Republican Nomination for Sheriff in 2004 and in 2008.
What skillsets and real life experience do you have that makes you the best candidate for the role?
I have great problem solving and analytical skills.  In addition, I am open minded and flexible to think outside of the box.  What happens in any organization when you have a person at the top for multiple years, the culture of the organization will gravitate to that person viewpoint. The change needs to happen where all rank and file have a view and a voice; it is time for a change.
What are the top three issues you are concerned with for your district/municipality?
  1. The low morale within the sheriff’s department does not serve the staff and/or the citizens of Macomb County well. It needs to be turned around and I can do this by providing the department with leadership as their Sheriff and being accountable to them.
  2. The shrinking tax base has stressed the budget. As an outsider I would be well positioned to take a hard look at where the fat and lean exists within the sheriff’s department and take appropriate action to reallocate the budget to best serve the department.
  3. The jail needs to be seriously renovated at minimum and ideally a new jail needs to be constructed.
  4. Competition between law enforcement agencies we need a Sheriff to engage cooperation between these agencies.
  5. Crime associated with illegal drugs
What are the solutions you will bring forward if elected?
Eliminate the culture of favoritism and elitism that has existed with the Sheriff’s department since former Sheriff Bill Hackel took office in 1977. The playing field needs to be leveled out and the management vs. rank and file approach has to come to an end.I will be hands-on Sheriff who will be more visible and accessible to the staff of the department in brainstorming solutions.  I will bring new methodologies to the department, those that work in business and incorporate them into the department. As Sheriff I will seek out any and all grant monies available for the necessary renovations and/or expansion of the jail.  My PhD might help in the grant writing process.  As a department we can come up with solutions to the issues that plague us, the answers reside within.  I will tap into the knowledge base of the department as they are the experts.  If and only if necessary, I will be involved in formulating a bond proposal to the voters of the county to consider, but this would be a last ditch solution.
What specific measures will you take to maintain low taxes and less expensive, limited government?
As Sheriff I would have little influence on lowering taxes, but ensure that the taxpayers of the county, which I am, one of them, get the most services for each dollar in taxes.  We want to feel that we are being protected as citizens.Within the Sheriff department there has not been anyone else at the reins other than the Hackel’s, even with the current Sheriff the Hackel influence is still present. I will eliminate non-effective programs and inefficiency within the entire department.
If elected, what will you do to better promote transparency in government?
Transparency in government is what I’m striving for.  We have to work within the budget that is given to the Sheriff’s department.  Overspending on inefficiencies’ and poor negotiations with other police department throughout the county is unacceptable. Transparency in government is key to the department’s efficiency. As Sheriff I will have an open door policy with both the department staff and the citizens of the county.
Have you received any endorsements?  If so, please list.
Eugene F. Groesbeck – A 23+ year veteran deputy with the Sheriff’s Department has endorsed me. He is past president, vice-president and steward with the Macomb County Professional Deputy Sheriff’s Association (MCPDSA), the union representing the corrections staff at the sheriff’s department. I am also seeking the endorsement of the MCPDSA.

Party Issues

Why are you a running as a Republican?
What prior involvement have you had in the Republican Party or Conservative organizations?
I won the Republican Party Nomination for Macomb County Sheriff in 2004 and 2008.  I also have been on the Executive Board of the Macomb County Republican’s since 2004.
What is your position on Obamacare?
I think it was not thought out well and going to bring our country to the brink of bankruptcy.  A better approach should have looked at how BCBSM handles their health care they are Not for Profit and will accept anyone regardless of pre existing conditions.
What is your position on abortion?
As a woman, I feel it is every females’ right to choose.
What is your position on the 2nd Amendment?
The right to bear arms is our constitutional right, and if someone was carrying at the midnight showing of Batman, maybe there would not be 12 dead and many wounded.
What is your position on public sector unions?
Personally I believe public sector unions are a necessity especially within the highly politically charged atmosphere within the sheriff’s department.

State/County/Local Issues

What are the two biggest issues you feel Macomb County is facing today?
  1. The tax base has been shrinking due to the housing crisis which is impacting our local governments’ budgets
  2. Competition between law enforcement agencies we need a Sheriff to engage cooperation between these agencies
Do you think Macomb County should have casinos?
There are no American Indian lands within Macomb County and to privatize a casino within Macomb County could exhaust the legal expenditures of Macomb County.
What is your position on the Ambassador bridge project?
I am for the Ambassador Bridge project as long as tax payer’s dollars are not used.
What is your position on special millages like the DIA or Zoo millages?
The DIA and Zoo Mileages are not the responsibility of the Macomb County Sheriff.  Understood, about trying to help, but as a Sheriff of Macomb County is in need of improvements to its jail and I will not be looking toward Wayne or Oakland County for support.
