Campaign Issues

Why are you running for this office?
I ran last term with a team that wanted to clean up Washington’s government, make it more business friendly, improve service and keep taxes low.  We weathered a bad economic storm and came out better than before because of our conservative fiscal approach.I want to work one more term to finish the job we started and show the world what government can be like when done right.
What skillsets and real life experience do you have that makes you the best candidate for the role?
I understand infrastructure projects having worked for a gas company for 45 years.  I have been both union and management, which gives me good perspective on union negotiations.  I was a paid on call fireman for many years, so I understand the challenges they face.  I am a senior so I understand the challenges seniors face.  I am a fiscal conservative so I am tough on spending.  I can put all these perspectives together to make sure we deliver quality but limited services at the right price.
What are the top three issues you are concerned with for your district/municipality?
  1. Growing our taxable value by getting more businesses to locate here is critical.  We have to continue to create the right environment to attract new businesses.  I have the desire to make this happen.
  2. We have 7 unions here in Washington.  Each time a contract comes up, taxpayers are at risk.  We have a solid team that will ensure taxpayers are not gouged by overzealous public sector unions.  I’ve had experience negotiating on both sides of the table and can help.
  3. We have some infrastructure investments that are on the horizon that must be done correctly and at the right price.  It will take people with experience in these items to make sure we succeed.  I have that experience.
What are the solutions you will bring forward if elected?
  1. Continue to get rid of any remaining red tape and regulatory barriers that keep business from locating here.
  2. Continue to say NO to unnecessary expenditures and make sure necessary expenditures are done for the right price.
  3. Hold the unions accountable to earning what they would earn in the private sector.
What specific measures will you take to maintain low taxes and less expensive, limited government?
I’ll fight tax increases and, instead, look to controlling costs.  I’m going to demand that our unions live within the Governor’s recommended medical sharing requirements.  I’m going to look closely at other union benefits regarding retirement that may be better than what people get in the real world.  I hope to see a water tower built to reduce our exposure to high Detroit Water charges.
If elected, what will you do to better promote transparency in government?
My job as trustee is to be out there in the community letting people know what is going on and getting their feedback so I can bring it to the board table.  I will continue to do that, especially with seniors. I speak my mind at meetings and when I meet with the public.
Have you received any endorsements?  If so, please list.
I haven’t requested any.  The people of Washington will decide whether to endorse me.

Party Issues

Why are you a running as a Republican?
That is what I am and always have been.  I haven’t worked this hard all my life to have it taken away to fund the latest governmental pet project or “cause”.  I believe that government should get out of my pocket and stick to just doing the necessary things and at a price you can do it for in the private sector.  As long as the party believes that, I am a Republican.
What prior involvement have you had in the Republican Party or Conservative organizations?
I have been a Republican all my life.  I contribute to Republican candidates.  I’ve run as a Republican and represented Republican principles by the way I fight costs at the township board table.
What is your position on Obamacare?
Repeal it and the people who forced it on us.
What is your position on abortion?
I respect life but I also think the government needs to stay out of personal decisions.
What is your position on the 2nd Amendment?
The right to defend your family is basic.  The government needs to keep its hands off my firearm.
What is your position on public sector unions?
They are bankrupting America and should be eliminated.

State/County/Local Issues

What are the two biggest issues you feel Macomb County is facing today?
Government spending and regulation are killing our competitiveness to attract business.

Unions are burying the body and driving up the cost of the funeral.

Do you think Macomb County should have casinos?
Casinos generate revenue but cause a lot of harm to the community.  We can do better.
What is your position on the Ambassador bridge project?
The government has to let business people run business and get out of the way.
What is your position on special millages like the DIA or Zoo millages?
These people are just reaching into our pockets instead of first cutting costs.  They have learned nothing from the last few years.  Vote NO.
