Campaign Issues

Why are you running for this office?
I have decided to make the move from County Commissioner to run for State Representative because I believe I will have a greater chance of helping Macomb County and its residents.
What skillsets and real life experience do you have that makes you the best candidate for the role?
I believe that Government should run more like a business and I have over 20 years of experience in managing, cost control, and structural organization that would help reduce the size of our Government and make it run more effectively.
What are the top three issues you are concerned with for your district/municipality?
1. Jobs/Economy 2. Education Reform 3. Taxes
What are the solutions you will bring forward if elected?
  • Jobs/Economy
    • Look at possible tax breaks for hiring unemployed workers and veterans
    • Lower sales tax on purchases made from Michigan based businesses
    • Develop a plan to help stop foreclosures. Keeping people in their homes will help keep consumer confidence high and help maintain property values
    • Make it more cost effective for companies to keep jobs here in Michigan
  • Education Reform
    • Make teacher tenure and pay dependent on how well their students perform
    • Public teacher pension reform – place new hires into a 401(k) type retirement system
    • Introduce more real business world education such as business management, marketing, supply chain management, and finance in high school to help prepare the students for the real world
    • Make graduating high school mandatory
    • Make receiving a drivers license before the age of 18 dependent on grades
  • Taxes
    • Smaller Government
    • Public employee pension reform
    • Eliminate/reform tax authority boards
    • Lower sales tax on products produced and sold in Michigan
    • Make any tax increases dependent on spending cuts and/or voter approval
What specific measures will you take to maintain low taxes and less expensive, limited government?
  • Lower sales tax on products produced and sold in Michigan
  • Any tax increases would be dependent on spending cuts and/or voter approval
  • Pension reform: Place public employee and teacher new hires into a 401(k) type retirement system. Michigan spends more in funding pensions then it does in salaries so major reform is needed.
  • Increase the use of technology where ever possible and eliminate positions through attrition
  • Consolidate services whenever possible
If elected, what will you do to better promote transparency in government?

  • Create websites with easy access to spending and contracts
  • When contracts are awarded, a list of the company’s executive/upper management should be made public
  • When taking office, an elected official’s ties with any business or organization should be made public
  • Make elected officials accountable for their actions. Such as being removed from office for not recusing themselves from voting on legislation that they have a personal interest in. An example would be if a legislator received campaign funds from Mr. Maroun and did not recuse themselves from voting on the new bridge proposal

Campaign Finance

  • I do not believe that PAC’s or unions should be allowed to donate to campaigns. This would help eliminate a candidate from receiving pressure to do what the PAC or union wants and focus more on the needs of their constituents.
  • Create and up to date website for posting of campaign finances. When a candidate or their committee spends or receives contributions, they would have to post it with 1 week for public view
Have you received any endorsements?  If so, please list.
I do not seek endorsements or accept money from PAC’s.

Party Issues

Why are you a running as a Republican?
I believe in; personal freedoms, low taxes, human rights (especially of the unborn child), small government, and the Constitution of the United States!
What prior involvement have you had in the Republican Party or Conservative organizations?
I officially joined in 2010 and helped campaign for now Governor Snyder and Attorney General Bill Schuette
What is your position on Obamacare?
It must be eliminated!!!
What is your position on abortion?
I would like to see abortion eliminated except when the mother’s life is in danger. This is an elective procedure, so at the very least, tax payers and health insurance providers should not pay for abortions.
What is your position on the 2nd Amendment?
I firmly believe in the right of the people to keep and bear Arms. I have my CPL and encourage my children to do the same.
What is your position on public sector unions?
I would like to see them eliminated. I do not think they have a place in the public sector because they are paid with tax dollars. Governments do not operate for profit so anytime raises or benefits increase, the money has to come from higher/new taxes or transferring funds from another program. Pay increases should be on a merit and performance basis.

State/County/Local Issues

What are the two biggest issues you feel Macomb County is facing today?
  1. The new form of Government. The Charter was poorly written and vague in most areas which is causing turbulence between the Office of County Executive and the Board of Commissioners. I am hoping the B.o.C. will address many of the issues in the Charter and have them placed on the November ballot.
  2. Economy. Macomb is losing thousands of residents due to the lack of jobs which causes a decrease in revenue to the County.
Do you think Macomb County should have casinos?
What is your position on the Ambassador bridge project?
I would like to see the addition to the Ambassador bridge. I believe the increased traffic ways would help increase commerce.I am also in favor of a second bridge as long as it is not placed on the backs of the tax payer, however, I do not agree with how the Governor is bypassing the legislature to get this done.
What is your position on special millages like the DIA or Zoo millages?
Before a special millage is placed on the ballot, it should be made to operate in the best interest of the tax payers. They must also know what they are actually voting on.I support both the DIA and Zoo, however, I in NO WAY support the creation of authority boards as they stand today. As commissioner, I voted NO on the Articles of Incorporation for the DIA because they in no way protected tax dollars from the possibility of misuse. Also, the DIA’s financial statements do not support the need for this millage at this time. They have net assets over $194 million so I believe that they could come up with ways to continue being self supportive for at least another two years.I have created a website so voters would have access to the DIA’s financial statements, the Articles of Incorporation from all 3 Counties, as well as the ballot proposals so they can make an informed decision. The website is www.macombdiamillage.info
