Campaign Issues

Why are you running for this office?
I can honestly say that my motivation to run for re-election is pride – pride to be a part of Macomb Township’s Board of Trustees.  I believe that our Township is truly “Gold Standard” when it comes to Township Government.  Collectively, we work hard to be extremely judicious with the use of our tax dollars.  Our Board is open, transparent, and fiscally sound with a strong sense of community.  We are the envy of surrounding Townships with respect to our  good schools, low taxes, and kid-friendly parks.
What skillsets and real life experience do you have that makes you the best candidate for the role?
As an incumbent I bring eight years of experience to the Board Table.  There are a few highlights in those eight years of which I am very proud.  One of them is my seven year involvement as a Director in the Macomb Twp Community Foundation.  I/We can boast of some pretty impressive accomplishments. For example:

  • The mural at the Recreation Center
  • Over $36,000 in scholarships for Township High School Seniors
  • The inception and completion of the Veterans and 1st responder’s memorial.  It is a respectful and reverent reminder of the sacrifices our “Heroes”, living and deceased, have made for our great Country.
  • Our latest venture is Youth Ambassador Program for High School Students so they can learn about and participate in Township Government.

Our Twp. has a AA+ Credit Rating for Municipal Bonds.  We are the fastest growing and the most financially viable community in the state.  We enjoy the 3rd highest tax base in Macomb County and have the 3rd lowest tax millage rate for Municipal Operations.  We can boast of a $29M General Fund surplus, and the citizens of Macomb Twp. can thank our current Board for those successes.

What are the top three issues you are concerned with for your district/municipality?
We always have to be concerned with declining revenues.  Our Board has a proven record when it comes to fiscal soundness [29M in General Fund surplus].   We need to supply all of the necessary services our residents have come to expect while balancing those declining revenues.  I believe we have shown that we can be creative enough to get that job done.
What are the solutions you will bring forward if elected?
I will continue exploring the opportunities of mixed usages in industrial areas.  It’s time to revise and update our industrial ordinances.  I will work to see continued progress on paving all of our Townships’ roads.  I will work to see all our sidewalks connected throughout our Township.
What specific measures will you take to maintain low taxes and less expensive, limited government?
I will continue to perform exactly as I have or the last eight years and that means to work to budget exactly as I/we have in the past.  I will be a part of continuing to control costs and to explore technologies that will help in that regard.  I will use my leadership skills to represent all taxpayers.  I am not afraid to stand up for what’s right.
If elected, what will you do to better promote transparency in government?
I really do not think that I and our Board could do anything more to promote transparency.

Party Issues

Why are you a running as a Republican?
I am and have been a life-long Republican and a fiscal conservative.
What prior involvement have you had in the Republican Party or Conservative organizations?
Macomb County Republican organization and the RCNMC.
What is your position on Obamacare?
Obamacare is an Abomination that needs to be repealed and Congress needs to start over from square one.  67% of the people in this country hate it.
What is your position on abortion?
I would like to see Roe V. Wade overturned.  Congress needs to reaffirm the sanctity of life.
What is your position on the 2nd Amendment?
I believe in our constitutional right to keep and bear arms.   What else is there to say?
What is your position on public sector unions?
Public Sector Unions contracts [defined benefits] are so generous they have become unsustainable and are bankrupting our cities and states.   Union members need to come to that realization.  Why should non-union people be expected to subsidize union pensions and health care?

State/County/Local Issues

What are the two biggest issues you feel Macomb County is facing today?
Declining revenues, balanced budgets, and elimination of the $30 Million Deficit without reducing the General Fund
Do you think Macomb County should have casinos?
Personally, I think there are enough casinos in the state.  Along with the potential revenues they bring there are unintended consequences — the addiction to gambling where families suffer and lives are ruined.  I am not for abolishing the casinos already here, but enough is enough.  I am not convinced that the revenues gained have been wisely spent.
What is your position on the Ambassador bridge project?
I don’t think we need another bridge to Canada even if Governor Synder builds it without using our taxes.
What is your position on special millages like the DIA or Zoo millages?
I am against special millages period.   We pay enough in taxes already.
