Campaign Issues

Why are you running for this office?
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Department has abandoned its primary duties as outlined by the State Constitution and State Statutes.  I will get the Sheriff’s department back on track for the security and benefit of all the citizens in the county.
What skillsets and real life experience do you have that makes you the best candidate for the role?
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Hillsdale College.I have been a police officer for over 19 years.  I am currently employed by the St. Clair Shores Police Department and hold the rank of Lieutenant.  I am in charge of the Evidence Technician Program and Field Training Program.  I led our Detective Bureau through a time of major cuts with no loss of service.  I was part of the team that designed and implemented our Field Training Program.  I have successfully managed budgets and manpower issues.

I teach at the Macomb Police Academy and have done so for 10 years.

I am the only certified law enforcement officer running for the Republican nomination.

What are the top three issues you are concerned with for your district/municipality?
  1. Budgetary issues are the biggest problem today.  All arms of government must reduce costs.  The Sheriff’s Department must cut the budget without sacrificing safety.
  2. The expansion of the Sheriff’s Department under the guise of “consolidation” is a disservice to the citizens of this county.  This continued expansion removes local control over law enforcement and costs the citizens of the entire county.  The Sheriff’s Department needs to re-focus its efforts to support municipal law enforcement, not become municipal law enforcement.
  3. The culture of the Sheriff’s Department must change.  There are obviously problems with the leadership of an organization when the leader does not have the full support of a majority of his people.
What are the solutions you will bring forward if elected?
It is difficult to give specific ideas for major budgetary changes until I can get a view from the inside.  However, spending over $2,000,000 for a new, unnecessary dispatch center is one example of current waste.  Legacy costs for employees are a major concern.  The pay and benefits for newly hired employees must not include the lifetime benefits currently enjoyed by Sheriff’s Deputies.Regarding the expansion of the Sheriff’s Department – Any new offers to “contract” police services for a community must include the total cost.  Recent contract offers did not include all the costs associated with policing a community.  The remaining costs are covered by tax dollars from the rest of the county.  All current contracts would be honored.

Finally, regarding the culture change needed – In my career I have had the opportunity to work for great leaders and leaders who were complete failures.  The great leaders have managed to keep in touch with the men and women “on the street”.  The failures became so disconnected from the people they lead that they failed to lead and began to push.  As Sheriff I would spend time in every unit in the department and accept input from the men and women who are directly serving the citizens of our county.

What specific measures will you take to maintain low taxes and less expensive, limited government?
I believe in local control of police services.  Expanding the roll of the Sheriff’s Department beyond its Constitutional and Statutory roll is the opposite of limited government.  Developing a jail holding facility in the south end of the county would allow local police to spend less time transporting prisoners and more time protecting their citizens.  Under our current system a single arrest could cause 3 round trips all the way to the county jail before the suspect is formally turned over to the Sheriff’s Department.  A south end unified booking and holding facility would save our communities time and resources.Restructuring employment contracts for new employees would save the county immediately and for years to come.

I will seek to privatize any services within the Sheriff’s Department that would not sacrifice safety and security.  Management and transportation of prisoners should only be conducted by sworn law enforcement personnel.

If elected, what will you do to better promote transparency in government?
Law enforcement has traditionally been a closed community.  This must change.  Any and all information that can be released to the public without compromising an ongoing investigation will be made readily available to the public.
Have you received any endorsements?  If so, please list.
I have been endorsed by the St. Clair Shores Command Officers Association as well as the officers I lead in the St. Clair Shores Police Officers Association.

Party Issues

Why are you a running as a Republican?
I believe strongly in limited government as outlined in the Constitution.  I am pro-life, pro-traditional family and a supporter of effective, efficient law enforcement.  The Republican Party platform is consistent with these beliefs.
What prior involvement have you had in the Republican Party or Conservative organizations?
I joined the Republican Party a few years ago.I am a graduate of one of the most conservative organizations in America, Hillsdale College.

I worked for the “International Policy Forum” in Washington D.C.

I am a member of Sheriff Mack’s Constitutional Posse.

What is your position on Obamacare?
Obamacare is not only bad for this country as a piece of legislation; it sets a horrible precedent for future federal mandates.  I believe the Supreme Court erred in its upholding the constitutionality of this legislation.
What is your position on abortion?
Life begins at conception.  Abortion should only be considered as an option to save the life of the mother.
What is your position on the 2nd Amendment?
The right to keep and bear arms must be defended.  As a young nation we fought for our freedom primarily with the arms of the citizens.  Any attempt to disarm American citizens is un-American and unconstitutional.
What is your position on public sector unions?
Many public sector unions have become too powerful and a burden on society.  However, properly managed unions protect employees from arbitrary and unfair treatment by unscrupulous leaders.  The power of the unions must be put “in-check” but complete abolition of the right to unionize would not be good for our county.

State/County/Local Issues

What are the two biggest issues you feel Macomb County is facing today?
Keeping a balanced budget is the biggest issue.Secondly, we must encourage controlled development that does not overwhelm our infrastructure.
Do you think Macomb County should have casinos?
What is your position on the Ambassador bridge project?
Taxpayer dollars should not be used to build a new bridge across the Detroit River.  If a second span can be erected without a burden on the taxpayers I would support the second span.
What is your position on special millages like the DIA or Zoo millages?
I am always in favor of allowing the citizens to vote on any new tax issues.  However, the development of new “taxing authorities” is simply wrong.  We are overburdened with taxes right already.
