Campaign Issues

Why are you running for this office?
I am seeking re-election to the Macomb County Board of Commissioners because there is more work to be done by experienced legislators under our new Charter form of government.  My demonstrated ability to work with people in the county and region along with my historical knowledge of Macomb County’s issues are needed in order to continue moving Macomb forward.
What skillsets and real life experience do you have that makes you the best candidate for the role?
I have 10 years experience as a county commissioner.  In addition, I’ve been involved in local inter-governmental organizations which have helped promote Macomb County such as being a member of the executive committee of Southeast Michigan Council of Governments and currently serve as a Vice Chair of the organization.  I’ve also been involved in the planning and execution of the Tri-County Summit a meeting of members of the board of commissioners from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties and Detroit City Council.
What are the top three issues you are concerned with for your district/municipality?
  1. Full transparency of county financial decisions. The Board exercised its charter provided right to approve procurement and contracting policies. I pledge to continue the fight for full transparency before, during, and after the decision making process.   Once the appeal court decision rules we will be able to plan our course of action.   If ruling in favor of the board, all public decisions and transactions will automatically appear on the website.  It we don’t prevail in court, we will have to consider a charter amendment.
  2. Providing the public with a two year budget and additional three year projection so that both elected leaders and the public have the information they need for decision making.
  3. I will continue helping residents learn about the services available to them through county government. I will continue providing information to residents via health and outreach programs and distribution of information.
What are the solutions you will bring forward if elected?
see previous question
What specific measures will you take to maintain low taxes and less expensive, limited government?
Not raise taxes, budget within our means, continually ask why do we do this and/or how else can the mandatory services be provided.
If elected, what will you do to better promote transparency in government?
Continually review ways that the county can make public its decision making process for compliance to our policy which is to post everything on the internet;   Look for best practices on ways to disclose information in a usable format for the public.

Party Issues

Why are you a running as a Republican?
Because I am both a fiscally and socially conservative person.
What prior involvement have you had in the Republican Party or Conservative organizations?
From 1972 when I helped Congressman Gerald Ford get re-elected to now, I have always been involved in promoting candidates, financially supporting candidates and organizations, volunteering for conservative campaigns, Republican precinct delegate for many years.  I’ve sent out post cards in support of issues, get out the vote cards and calls, and much much more.
What is your position on Obamacare?
Mandatory is never good.  Let the market control.
What is your position on abortion?
I am against it except to save the life of the mother when no other means are possible.
What is your position on the 2nd Amendment?
I support it.
What is your position on public sector unions?
Their members provide valuable services for the county.  We work with them.

State/County/Local Issues

What are the two biggest issues you feel Macomb County is facing today?
  1. Macomb County Government is facing a lack of transparency in County Government Decision making by the office of the executive.  None of the executive’s contract award decision making is done at an open meeting AND none of it is available on the internet until AFTER the decision has been made.
  2. County Government needs to have a two year budget approval process with an addition 3 year financial projection.
Do you think Macomb County should have casinos?
What is your position on the Ambassador bridge project?
I’m not a decision maker on this issue.  Because Macomb County is between the two major Michigan crossing (between Port Huron and Detroit) it is important that there be a continuous, efficient way to cross the borders for the needs of residents and businesses alike.
What is your position on special millages like the DIA or Zoo millages?
In theory, I don’t think it is the responsibility of county government to support cultural events and civic institutions regardless of where they are located. I think support is best provided by the people who are interested in and enriched by what these organizations provide to the public. However, when the organizations ask for the ability to avail themselves of resources available to them by state statute, then it is the county’s duty to consider their request, such as the DIA did recently.Ultimately it is up to the voters to decide if they want to tax themselves to help those non-profit organizations.
