Campaign Issues

Why are you running for this office?
Our residents are struggling with mortgages that are under water, trying to get by on diminished and/or fixed incomes.  The last thing they need is higher taxes.  Township Government must tighten its fiscal belt and learn to function on less.  This means a zero growth budget and cutbacks where and when appropriate.  As Township Trustee, I will apply these principles, make the necessary tough decisions and guard against the squandering of taxpayer dollars.
What skillsets and real life experience do you have that makes you the best candidate for the role?
Township resident for 24 years.  My children are Anchor Bay graduates.  Law Enforcement Officer with Detroit Police Department for 18 years.  Union Representative for 10 years.  Bachelor and Masters Degrees from Wayne State.  Served as member of Chesterfield Township Police and Fire Board and the Elected Officials Compensation Commission.  Worked in Education for 21 years, currently as Administrator with Anchor Bay School District for 18 years.  Member of FOP, Member of St. Peters Catholic Church.I hope to serve on a Township Board comprised of dedicated and conscientious public servants selected by the voters.  We need a representative Board willing to work toward “consensus building” to serve the best interests of our residents.  There is no room for big egos.  We must recognize that taxpayer dollars are limited and must be managed and spent wisely.
What are the top three issues you are concerned with for your district/municipality?
  • Maintain adequate levels of police, fire and remaining Township services
  • Strict accountability of Department heads to operate within their Budgets.  Remember that those governed must also survive within their means
  • Implement and maintain a zero growth policy within local government during this time of austerity.
What are the solutions you will bring forward if elected?
(See Below)
What specific measures will you take to maintain low taxes and less expensive, limited government?
A tandem response will be provided to the above two questions as follows.  Reintroduction of the Police and Fire Advisory Board to review public safety expenditures.  This entity, composed of Township citizens, would review proposed expenditures and advise the Township Board if such requests are reasonable or excessive.  Consider a shared Emergency Dispatching Center with other communities to reduce the Township’s total costs in that area.  A thorough analysis of the merits and needs of all Township expenditures should be the norm.
If elected, what will you do to better promote transparency in government?
Encourage residents to supply a secure data base with their e-mail addresses.  Timely electronic broadcasts would then notify citizens of the time, place, location, and agendas of all elected or advisory board meetings.
Have you received any endorsements?  If so, please list.
I have not actively sought any endorsements during this primary cycle.

Party Issues

Why are you a running as a Republican?
My personal values and fiscal beliefs are best represented and articulated by the Republican Party.
What prior involvement have you had in the Republican Party or Conservative organizations?
I am a member of the Macomb County Republican Party.  I have assisted fellow conservative candidates with their campaigns as well as providing financial support.
What is your position on Obamacare?
Strongly oppose.
What is your position on abortion?
Oppose, except in instances of rape, incest, or when the mother’s health at risk. Partial birth abortion should always be considered criminal when used to end an unwanted pregnancy.  Excluding the latter, the decision to abort a pregnancy is ultimately between a woman and her conscience.
What is your position on the 2nd Amendment?
Private ownership of legally defined firearms is a Constitutional right for citizens in good standing and who possess the relevant training and knowledge.
What is your position on public sector unions?
I support Police and Fire, and they must not be relegated to ‘at will’ employees.  Contractual issues negotiated through good faith bargaining should be honored.  Future changes to the existing procedures could be amended through the legislative process.

State/County/Local Issues

What are the two biggest issues you feel Macomb County is facing today?
I am currently more focused on local issues; however, state legislators are subject to term limits.  This concept should apply to all levels of full-time elected officials.
Do you think Macomb County should have casinos?
No.  The metropolitan area is at the saturation level with these enterprises.  Concern has already been expressed as to how Toledo’s proposed casino will adversely effect the three existing in Detroit.
What is your position on the Ambassador bridge project?
The governor and business leaders have expressed the desire for a second span as well as the means for its construction.  If this can be done without any burden to the Michigan tax payer, then go for it.
What is your position on special millages like the DIA or Zoo millages?
Although I value the importance of our cultural institutions, I question the fairness of saddling the tax payer with additional millages during these fiscally challenging times.
