Chief Judge Chmura will be speaking on the Rule of Law – What District Courts are About

SHUR is honored to be hosting Chief Judge John Chmura of the Warren District Court. John Chmura was born in Detroit and lived his early years in Poletown. In 1965 Judge Chmura’s parents bought a home in Warren which is where he grew up and went to school. He attended Michigan State University and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from James Madison College. He attended the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison where he was awarded his law degree in 1988. Returning to Warren, Judge Chmura began his professional career by working as a staff attorney for Hyatt Legal Services. He became involved with the Macomb County Taxpayers Assn. and in 1991 acting as pro bono attorney for the MCTA he filed suit and won the case against the Robin Hood legislation that the state wanted to enact. In 1991 he also established his own practice. Soon after he was appointed by Attorney General Frank Kelley as a Macomb County Public Administrator and began specializing in probate law. Governor John Engler appointed him to the 37th district court bench in 1996 where he still serves. The Michigan Supreme Court appointed him chief judge, a position that he still holds. Judge Chmura lives in Warren with his wife Ann Marie and his two children, Jonathan and Andrew. John has served as president of the Macomb County Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division. He is past treasurer and president of Advocates Bar Association. He also served 12 years as treasurer of the Macomb County Probate Bar Association. He is involved with the Warren Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club of Warren where he writes a weekly newsletter. As a member of St. Anne’s church he is a member of the Ushers’ Club and the Men’s Club as well as the De La Salle Dad’s Club. He is a merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the Detroit Athletic Club.
